Bring Your Cild to Work Day in Tallahassee

Here is my short speech today at the DEO sponsored "Bring your child to work" day in the state capitol.

Like our Governor, the CareerSource network is all about jobs!
At CareerSource Capital Region we see a bright future for the youth in our region. Given that we have two fine Universities and the best community college in America with TCC, the talent that is available to local businesses is great.
The jobs most in demand in our region – Nurses top the list as usual, then truck driver, retail supervisors, retail sales, customer service representatives, and web developers.
Our top employers are government, education, healthcare, retail, and hospitality. So a wide range of opportunities exist here in the Capital Region.

Serving Gadsden, Leon, and Wakulla counties, CareerSource Capital Region’s Career Centers are working with the school systems in all three counties. We have a youth program funded by the Department of Labor that serves in-school and out of school youth. We have a youth council that connects the various agencies that serve youth like Big Brothers Big Sisters, Goodwill DISC Village, Tallahassee Urban League, and the United Way of the Big Bend. Together, we are building an integral systems approach to service that leverages our individual assets to more effectively serve our community.

On this day, about 25 years ago, I brought my daughter to work and gave her a tour of a steel mill that I called on for the family business. She is now a Mechanical Engineer with a Master’s Degree working for the Navy. I believe that tour opened her eyes to the possibilities she would not have considered had I not taken her and shown her some amazing processes of making steel.

In closing, CareerSource Capital Region works with employers and job seekers to find the career opportunities best suited for the desires and talents of our youth.
Thank You
